When Abdülmecid would grace theaters with his presence, Beyoğlu would be fully covered with carpets so that the Sultan’s horse could step more majestically. The carpet that was spread under the Sultan’s feet from the street all the way to the private door that opened directly into his private box belonged to my maternal grandfather Nasrî Franko Paşa. My uncles Fethi Bey and Franko Kusa Paşa have kept it as a souvenir.”

Galata ve Pera’nın bir finans ve diplomasi merkezi haline gelmesi, Pera’nın uluslararası kültür sanat trafiğinin uğrak noktalarından biri olmasına da yol açtı. Önceleri elçiliklerde, özel eğlencelerle başlayan tiyatro gösterileri, 1830’larda kamusal alana taşındı. Nasrî Franko’nun kuzeni, Naum Paşa’nın amcası olan Michel Naum’un, Galata Sarayı karşısında, 1831 Yangını’nda yanmış olan binasının arazisinde, Bosco adlı İtalyan bir illüzyonist tiyatro salonu inşa ettirmişti. Tiyatro bir süre sonra Naumların yönetimine geçmiş, yeniden inşa edilmiş ve Naum Tiyatrosu olarak anılmaya başlanmıştı. Naum Tiyatrosu, bir yangınla başladığı hikâyesi 1870 yangınıyla sona erene kadar semtin kültürel tarihinde çok önemli bir rol oynadı.
Naum’un ardından, Odeon, Cristal, Concordia, Yeni Fransız Tiyatrosu ve Tepebaşı sahnelerinde, Gabrielle Réjane; Charlotte Lysès, Jane Hading, Charlotte Wiehe gibi yıldızların yanı sıra, Yusuf Franko’nun albümüne de misafir olan dünyaca ünlü Sarah Bernhardt, Jacques (Aristidis) Damala(s) ve Constant Coquelin sahne aldı.
The transformation of Galata and Pera into a financial and diplomatic center also made it possible for Pera to become a busy hub of international culture and art. During the 1830s, dramatic performances that initially started in embassies, as private entertainment, moved to the public sphere. On the land plot across from the Galata Palace, where the building of Michel Naum, Nasrî Franko’s cousin and Naum Paşa’s uncle, burned down in the fire of 1831, an Italian illusionist called Bosco built a theater. A while later, the theater was taken over by the Naums, rebuilt, and renamed Naum Theater. It came to play an important role in the cultural history of the neighborhood, until its story, which started with a fire, ended with the Fire of 1870.
After the Naum Theater burned, many famous stars such as Gabrielle Réjane, Charlotte Lysès, Jane Hading, and Charlotte Wiehe took the stage at the Odéon, Cristal, Concordia, New French Theater, and Tepebaşı venues. The world-famous Sarah Bernhardt, Jacques (Aristidis) Damala(s), and Constant Coquelin, who appeared in Yusuf Franko's album, also performed on these stages.
