Gelişen Osmanlı mizah basınının, Beyoğlu’nun değişen fiziki ve sosyal çevresine kayıtsız kalması mümkün değildi. Avrupa modasının, yeni sanat formlarının ve yaşam tarzlarının arz-ı endam ettiği Beyoğlu, mizahçıya hiciv için eşsiz malzemeler veriyordu. Dahası, günlük basının yaygınlaşmasıyla eş zamanlı olarak belediye hizmetlerinin kurumsallaşma çabaları, şehre dair meseleler etrafında bir kamuoyunun şekillenmesine fırsat vermişti. Beyoğlu hakkındaki beklentilerin yüksekliği, tespitlerin ucunu da sivriltiyor; semtte sürdürülmeye çalışılan üst sınıf sosyal alışkanlıklarla altyapı yetersizlikleri arasındaki tezat, mizahçıların en popüler konularından birini oluşturuyordu.
It was impossible for the developing Ottoman humor press to remain indifferent to Beyoğlu changing physical and social environment. European fashions, novel artistic forms, and lifestyles that manifested themselves in Beyoğlu provided the humorist with unique materials.
Furthermore, the institutionalization efforts of the municipal services alongside the spread of daily press presented an opportunity for the formation of a public opinion around issues related to the city. The fact that expectations from Beyoğlu were quite high made the observations all that much sharper. The contrast between the upper-class social habits the area was trying to support and the lack of proper infrastructure made up one of the most popular subject matters for humorists.
