Yusuf Franko’s characters did not merely appear side by side in the pages of an album, but they also interacted with each other in actual places and were tied to one another as relatives, friends, or business associates. This network map illustrates why Yusuf Franko’s album tells a Beyoğlu story.
While displaying the connections of the characters with the various locales, care has been given to pinpoint these on the map as accurately as possible. However, the inconsistency of the information and the scale of the map make an error-free representation impossible. This work should not be read with the accuracy expected of a land survey map, but as a graphical representation of how the relationships within a social circle in Beyoğlu at the end of 19th century were forged, and how they gathered strength from the urban locales.
*This is not an exhaustive list of Yusuf Franko’s characters. The map includes only those whose relations to each other or to specific places could be identified. Diplomats with temporary residence terms in Istanbul are excluded from this work.
**Numbers seen on the map come from the original Goad Plan. Character numbers do not match with the plate/section numbers.
